오늘 미국의 한 대학에서 교수로 계신 분이 메일이 왔습니다. 평화비의 빈 의자가 의미하는 것이 무엇인지 묻는 내용이었습니다. 그래서 제가 답을 보냈습니다. 여러분과도 함께 공유하고 싶습니다.

today, i received an email from an american university professor. they asked me the meaning of the peace monument’s empty seat. i sent them this response and i wanted to share it with all of you too.

평화비의 소녀옆에 있는 빈 의자는 세가지 의미가 있습니다.

the empty seat next to the young girl has three meanings.

하나는, 이미 돌아가신 분들의 자리, 추모의 마음이 있구요.

first, it is a memorial to the “comfort women” survivors who have already passed away.

다른 하나는 연대와 참여의 의미입니다. 소녀가 “여기 같이 앉자”라고 권하지않아도 지나가는 누구든지 이 빈의자에 앉아 소녀와 같이 나란히 일본대사관을 향해 응시하면서 소녀가 요구하는 것을 함께 요구하는 것. 수요일이 아니어도 매일 매일 이 의자는 그런 사람들에 의해서 수요시위를 계속 이어가는 자리라는 것을 의미하구요.

second, it stands for solidarity and participation. although the young girl might not say, “sit here with me”, anyone passing by can sit in that empty seat side-by-side with her and gaze towards the japanese embassy, demanding together with her the seven demands of the “comfort women”. even if it’s not wednesday, that seat becomes a “wednesday protest” each and every day, through the people who sit in it.

세번째는 쉼과 휴식을 의미합니다. 관광을 온 사람들이 앉아서 인증샷을 찍고 가기도 하구요. 이 주변에 길을 가다 보면 사람들이 앉아서 쉴 수 있는 의자같은 것이 없습니다. 나이 든 노인들이 이 거리를 쭈욱 걸어가다 아픈 다리 잠시 쉬었다 갈 수 있는 그런 의자… 그렇게 쉼과 휴식속에서 소녀들의 역사와 소녀들이 원했던 평화로운 세상을 생각할 수 있는 공간…

third, it is a place for rest. tourists also come and take pictures of themselves sitting in that seat. if you look around, there is nowhere in that area for people to sit and rest. for the elderly walking down that road, it is a place for them to rest their aching legs before they set back off again. in that moment of rest, it is a place where we can sit and think about the history of the young girl and the peaceful world that she wanted.

빈 의자는 바로 그런 의미를 가진 공간입니다.
