i once had a conversation with an old coworker about why i thought korea’s overseas adoption industry was problematic and he answered with, “yea, it’s bad but don’t you think korea’s economic development would’ve been impossible without it?” as if this was a DEFENSE of the adoption industry… instead of an argument to condemn the actions of a state that prioritized economic agendas over the welfare of its citizens. i gave up on the discussion then because i realized that if we couldn’t come to a consensus about the duty that a government has to provide for and protect its citizens (especially its most vulnerable ones - children), then we’d likely not be able to find a common ground anywhere else either.
